There’s No Small Job: Why We Treat Every Project Like It Matters

Three years ago, we got a call about drywall.

Not a kitchen remodel. Not a home addition. Just a hole in the wall—maybe the size of a dinner plate—that needed patching in a rental property.

We showed up the next day, fixed it, painted it, and handed the landlord an invoice for less than a hundred dollars.

Last month, that same landlord called us back. This time, it was for a complete kitchen renovation in his personal home. Granite countertops, custom cabinetry, new appliances, backsplash, flooring—the whole works. A $40,000 project.

Why did he call us? Because three years ago, we treated his $75 drywall repair like it was the most important job we had that day.

“To me and Alec, there’s no small job. Every job has an impact to the customer and to the family that’s living in the home.”

Small Repairs Build Big Relationships

Here’s what most contractors don’t tell you: the big projects—the ones everyone wants to land—rarely start with a phone call asking for a $50,000 renovation.

They start with something small.

A leaking faucet. Baseboards that won’t stay attached. A ceiling fan that needs replacing. A few square feet of cracked tile.

“Whether it’s a small hole of drywall that needs to be repaired, or baseboards coming off in one room—those small repairs, just like any relationship you have, those small points of contact always create a smooth relationship.”

We’ve learned over the past decade that people need to trust you before they invite you into the bigger parts of their lives. And trust isn’t built during a sales pitch or a flashy website portfolio. Trust is built when you show up on time to fix their wobbly deck railing and treat it like it’s the Taj Mahal.

“The more you build a relationship with someone, the more they trust you with the bigger things.”

What “Small” Projects Actually Look Like

Let me (Josie) give you some examples of “small” jobs we’ve done in the past month:

  • Replaced a garbage disposal that quit working
  • Painted a single bedroom for a couple expecting their first baby
  • Fixed a sticky door that wouldn’t close properly
  • Installed a new light fixture in a dining room
  • Repaired water-damaged baseboards in a bathroom
  • Hung shelves in a home office

Are these going to make our portfolio page? Probably not.

Are they going to lead to kitchen renovations, bathroom remodels, sunroom additions, and custom deck builds? They already have.

We Become Family

One of the most common things we hear from our clients—and I mean we hear this all the time—is this:

“A lot of our customers frequently say, ‘We don’t know what we’re gonna do once we’re not talking to you every day.’ We become friends and become family, and I think that’s really important.”

That doesn’t happen when you just show up, do the work, and leave. That happens when you treat someone’s home—and their project, no matter how small—with genuine care.

We’ve been invited to birthday parties. We’ve prayed with families going through hard times. We’ve met kids and grandkids and heard stories about jobs and dreams and struggles. We’ve celebrated with clients when they got promotions, when they had babies, when they retired.

And it all started because we showed up for the “small” stuff.

From Handyman Service to Full Renovations

If you’re reading this and thinking, “I’ve got a bunch of small repairs that need doing, but I don’t want to waste a contractor’s time”—stop.

You’re not wasting our time.

In fact, we specifically offer handyman services for exactly this reason. We want to help you with the small things. Not because we’re trying to upsell you (though if you eventually need a complete home renovation or an addition, we’d love to help with that too).

We do it because every job has an impact on the family living in the home.

That leaking faucet? It’s driving you crazy every time you hear it drip at night.

That wobbly handrail? It’s making your aging parents nervous every time they come over.

That chipped tile in the bathroom? It’s the first thing you see every morning, and it’s been bothering you for months.

Those things matter. They matter to you. So they matter to us.

What Happens When You Build Trust

Here’s the beautiful thing about treating small jobs with respect: people notice.

And when they’re ready for something bigger—when they decide it’s time to finally remodel that outdated kitchen, or add that sunroom they’ve been dreaming about, or build that multi-level deck in the backyard—they already know who to call.

They call the contractors who showed up on time for the drywall repair.

They call the people who didn’t make them feel stupid for asking questions.

They call the team who treated their rental property patch job like it mattered.

And that’s us.

“The more relationship you have with who you’re working with, the better you’re going to be and the more stable you’re going to feel and the more safe and the more excited you’re going to feel about the end result.”

Our Philosophy on Work

Alec and I believe in building relationships, not just buildings. We believe in showing up with the same level of care whether it’s a $100 repair or a $100,000 addition.

We believe that how you do anything is how you do everything.

If we’re careless with the small stuff, why would you trust us with the big stuff?

If we’re dismissive when you need help with something “minor,” why would you invite us into your home for something major?

We wouldn’t. And we don’t expect you to either.

That’s why there’s no small job at H&H Construction.

Every repair is an opportunity to serve someone well. Every project—no matter the size—is a chance to build trust, demonstrate integrity, and create a relationship that might last years.

Some of our best clients started with the smallest requests. And we’re grateful for every single one.

Ready to Start—Big or Small?

Whether you need a complete home renovation, a custom addition, or just some handyman repairs around the house, we’d love to hear from you.

No job is too small. Every project matters.

“We hope that everyone that interacts with us feels welcomed, feels as though they were taken care of and were heard and listened to and held. If that is done, then our job’s been done.”
